Update on Paul’s Ride for the Boys –
8/20/2011
That
mileage equals two plus trips on the original route that began in
Astoria, Oregon and ended in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The 8
week virtual journey meant that Boys’ Home “visited” Prineville, Oregon,
Burley Idaho, Dubois, Wyoming, Pierre, South Dakota, Fon du Lac,
Wisconsin and Brantford, Ontario.
Although
we have ended the virtual journey, we still are seeking contributions to
the Boys’ Home School – please consider a donation online or by mail.
Update on Paul’s ride for the boys
Unfortunately, Paul had a bike accident and broke his collarbone. After months of training, Paul will not be able to begin his bike ride to benefit the Boys’ Home School. More details are in his blog at
www.crossusacyclist.wordpress.com.
However, the staff, boys and supporters have decided to have a “virtual” ride and walk/ride the same number of miles Paul would have covered in his transcontinental ride. We hope to cover 3,667 miles and continue to seek supporters of the Boys’ Home School. Would you like to join us? If so, send us the number of miles you walk /ride weekly and we will add them to our total beginning June 20.
So, please consider following along with this “virtual” bike ride on facebook.

What is Paul doing?
This year I am serving as the President of the Board of Trustees for Boys' Home. On June 19, 2011 in Astoria, Oregon at the Pacific Ocean's edge, I will start a bicycle trip eastward across the USA and part of Canada. I will arrive in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at the Atlantic Ocean's edge on August 8, 2011. 50 days, 2 countries, 10 states and one province, 3667 miles. Averaging 80 miles per day, the most miles ridden in a single day will be 120 miles.
I have been training for this over most of the winter and am now riding more than 100 miles per week in preparation. It has been a lifetime dream of mine and now I shall be able to make it come true.
I will be supported by the America By Bicycle excursion team. You can see how this works at www.americabybicycle.com/AAN/
I shall be raising your awareness of Boys' Home and seeking donors like you to contribute toward the school at Boys' Home.
Why is Paul riding for the school at Boys' Home?
I am entering my 7th and last year as a Trustee. Serving there has evoked a passion for the mission of the Boys' Home ministry. In that time I have come to understand how much the school at Boys' Home is a key part of the program in unlocking a boy's potential. Often, the boys arrive at Boys' Home and are testing at 2-3 years below their peers in reading and math skills.
Beginning in 2001, the newly constructed Greer Education Center on campus has taken boys and given them individual attention to elevate their skills. The results are astounding; having math and reading skill levels gain 3 years or more on average is the new norm. This has become an important part of the program to elevate young men to a social and intellectual level that is at par with their contemporaries.
I am thankful for my own quality education and for that of my children. I know that socially and economically disadvantaged young men need similar educational opportunities. I am personally dedicated to ensuring that this facet of the program at Boys' Home continues to be well sustained with quality resources and teachers. It is the linchpin to success!
This is why I am riding for the school at Boys' Home.
If you would like to help me make a lasting difference in the lives of these young men through education, then join in supporting this ride for a reason... biking for the school at Boys' Home. Donate today!
