BOYS’ HOME ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

CHRISTMAS GATHERING 2011

October, 2011

Greetings to all Alumni, family and friends!  It is time to report to you one again.  We see all the many colors of the autumn season which reminds us of the soon to be Christmas season.  Boy, was it hot and dry around Charlottesville and most of all of Virginia.  I am sure we all are happy to enjoy cooler weather.

Well, I will keep this letter to you short.  I am sure you have read my letters in the past.  Once again you all are invited to our 2011 Christmas gathering on the “Hill.”  Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 10th, for a really fun day!  Bring your family and friends and enjoy a visit with the boys, good food, and some of the most beautiful Christmas decorations of the season.  As always you will enjoy a visit back into your past at Martha’s Boys’ Home Museum, a chance to see some old friends, visit the cottages, and help us plan for the future of BHAA.

I thank all of you who were able to make it last Christmas and this past June.  It was great to see people like Rick Turner, Carlyle Colyer, Kenny Burns, Homer Fisher, Rex Hicks, Bob Dunn, John Dunn, Spike Felty, John Hall (all the way from California), Bobby Via, Doug Via, Donnie Wheatley, Martha Terry, Paul Siple, Melvin Dove, Dennis Pinner, Danny Cale  and Tony Thurston.  This was Tony’s first time attending an Alumni meeting.   He lives in Covington at 334 E. Phillip Street and his phone number is 540-968-2660, for those who remember him and desire to contact him.   As always we had a fun time!  We had lots of pictures of past gatherings to look at, lots of good food (thanks Boys’ Home), and fun with the residents.

At our meeting it was approved that we will develop a pilot “Regional Chapter of BHAA” in the western area of Virginia including Covington and surrounding counties and towns.  The goal is to foster more social contact and to help our Association keep up with each other on a regular basis.   I feel that if we can pull this off we could see a brighter future for our Association.   Robert “Bobby” Via has agreed to help with this endeavor.  I am developing a master list of everyone in the Western part of the country.  He will be the acting leader, chief, captain, to help us develop this. It is only to have fun over food, coffee, sport, etc.   There are no rules or guidelines except to have fun and help us improve our Association.   He will be contacting all of you who live in the Western regional of Virginia soon to set up a meeting.

Don’t forget our big day on December 10th.   While you are planning your holiday festivities please include a trip to Boys’ Home.  You deserve it after a long year!  Please remember us if you can’t make the trip, by mailing a small donation to help our Association continue helping Boys’ Home and the boys.

Please fill out the form below and mail back to Boys’ Home and let us know if you can make it and how many will be with you so we can be sure there is enough food.  If you cannot attend, check that block and send us an update of your life and make sure we have your correct address.  Bring old clothing and gear if you plan to fish or take part in a paint ball skirmish.

Also, remember if you have news about any alumni member, his family, who may have passed away this past year, or any who are experiencing illness, please be sure to let me know that we may send them a card and let them know we are thinking of them.  E-mail me at JimNancy2@hotmail.com, or phone me (434)960-0038.     Also, we still need to increase the Boys’ Home list of potential candidates for the Hall of Fame.  Call or e-mail me, or contact Boys’ Home so we can contact them and gather required information.

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, December 10th.

  One of the few,
   Jim Miller ‘66
   BHAA President
