Fun: The lighter side of Boys' Home | Spring 2012
Snowshoe Ski Trip
Over winter
break, Boys’ Home residents participated in fun and adventurous
activities at Snowshoe Ski resort. The activities included snowboarding,
skiing, snow tubing and indoor swimming. Many residents experienced this
joyful occasion for the very first time. From my observation, they were
extremely excited and intrigued by the winter weather fun.
As for
myself, I chose to participate in the snowboarding activity. I
thoroughly enjoyed snowboarding. It was very engaging and daring. I felt
excitement and boldness as I attacked each slope. As a matter of fact, I
felt that I owned the slopes and could fly through the air. Truly, I had
an awesome time and look forward to going back again.
A
Long Shot!
D’Andre, an 11 year old
from Roanoke, Virginia displayed his own version of March
Madness. While everyone was talking about the March college basketball
tournament, D’Andre’ tried his hand at making some long shots too.
One day,
during a recess break at the Boys’ Home School, D’Andre asked his
teacher, Mrs. Kelley Calhoun, to record his practice shot. Mrs. Calhoun
said, “ I didn’t even know my cell phone was able to record video, but
D’Andre told me it did.”
With the
recorder going, he took a small running start and launched up a shot,
SWISH! The ball went in from around 27 feet away from the basket.
When the shot dropped, D’Andre ran around the gym excitedly. He has made
that shot three more times since then. He’s been playing basketball for
7 years and hopes to play for the Alleghany County Recreation League
next year.
